In search of weirdness

According to someone in the know, the "Keep Portland Weird" bumper sticker movement started about 3 years ago. Certainly it is merely a coincidence that we moved to the Portland metro about 3 years ago. Certainly.

Thinking kitschy, not weird, yesterday we eagerly drove over to a suburb of Portland to take in the 4th Annual Giant Pumpkin Regatta. According to the news story, people in possession of truly huge pumpkins and a sense of fun and weird, scoop out said pumpkins, hop in, and attempt to paddle around a small lake. Upon hearing of such an event, how could one NOT add it to the list of "must dos"?

Unfortunately, the gourd floaters aren't marketers and their website incorrectly listed the start times. Needless to say, our hopes for pumpkin bobbin' good times were squashed when we realized we arrived well after the final heat had finished.

The day still scored one for weirdness, however, as we then spent several hours roaming an antique fair. We came home with a new piece of "garden art" we've named Norbert. He is a white cast iron pig with wings. We expect he'll get along exquisitely with Murray, the life-sized Styrofoam elk that lives in our front pasture.

Perhaps that bumpersticker wasn't such a coincidence after all.

Someday, many years from now, a non-weird couple will buy Woodhaven and scratch their heads trying to come up with a good way to get rid of the winged lawn pig.

Perhaps a tournament of some sort...
