The (almost) Perfect Storm

We were snowed in for three days and I really should have more to show for it. I mean other than my favorite 54 photos that are posted on Facebook. I could have done so much more!

I could have cleaned out the closet that is still an explosion of boxes, tissue paper, and rolls of Christmas gift wrap. I could have organized my recipes that are still scattered in five different locations in the general vicinity of my kitchen. I could have written a letter to an elderly relative. I could have made birthday cards for February. I could have dusted.

Instead, I lounged. I sipped tea. I watched it snow. I stayed in my pajamas until 2:00 or 3:00 or whenever I decided I really needed a shower. I provided the kittens a soft spot to nap. I played on the Wii for “exercise.” I took lots of pictures. I listened to my entire “Mellow Music” playlist on my iPod. I removed my chipped Pink Forever nail polish.

There were a couple of items in the “productive” category, I suppose. I did do some laundry. And I cleaned the toilets. I mean really cleaned, with a pumice stone – which I previously thought were only used for removing calluses on feet? Let it be noted, I have two separate stones. I also shined some shoes for the first time ever. I have to admit, the Kiwi does look better than a Sharpie to cover scuffs. And I made reservations for several long-discussed trips to presumably warmer locations. Mahalo.

I also cooked several meals - in a row! It took some planning and, sadly, the last meal was only somewhat successful. It involved a lot of scraping and soaking and little charred bits, none of which I suspect are customary for a “Classic Stew with Sirloin.” I tried to salvage the meal with some homemade cookies. They should have involved a greased cookie sheet; instead they involved a vacuum.

And, of course, there were the beverages! We discovered during The Great Snow-In of 2008 that snow is a spectacular addition to all sorts of adult libations. I have quite enjoyed several Snowgaritas since Monday. And last night’s cookie chunks were chased by Bailey’s over snow. Y.U.M.

We also took some truly wonderful walks on our hill, chatting with neighbors, admiring snowmen, watching dogs scarf snow, and confirming the road conditions were indeed beyond those indicated for transplanted Californians.

Last night we left the house shortly before dusk and were treated to a most lovely and romantic walk in the snow, lit by warm homes and driveway lights. I tried desperately to breathe it all in, knowing that just 24 hours later the magic would be gone. Dratted 48°F rainstorm.

All in all, I am pleased with how well Rob and I weathered our 14 inches of snow over three days, henceforth to be known as SnoMG!. We were forewarned and therefore largely prepared. Although our satellite dish filled with snow resulting in a “Complete Signal Loss,” we never lost power and were able to keep informed online. And we showered daily, eventually. There were a few misses, however. On Day 2, I started a shopping list.

Seems we have run out of dryer sheets and tequila.

Lovely! It was a little more ... frenetic at our place. Your storm sounds very nice.
