A few screws loose

Our newspaper – surprisingly NOT The Local Rag this time – recently reported that more than 100 cars came into our local tire center with wallboard screws stuck in their tires. Because this paper also serves the metropolis that is Vancouver, the reporter was kind enough to explain to the city-slickers that wallboard screws are “…meant for fastening wallboard to walls.” He neglected, however, to explain what wallboard is.

The assistant manager at the tire center posits that a truck loaded with construction supplies accidentally spilled a box of screws in town. What an unexpected, optimistic explanation that is! Here I figured some annoying kid got really busy throwing screws on the roads around town. As a sign yet again that I’m really more of a suburban-urban gal, I assumed this was intentional; a prank; perhaps even a misdemeanor. And yet, the manager is probably exactly right. Nearly 3 years here and this little world still catches me by surprise.
