Degrees of being a local

Here it is, the middle of July, the middle of summer even. And it’s raining. According to our nifty weather station, a full 0.37 inch of ‘liquid sunshine’ has fallen on Woodhaven so far today. And the amazing thing? I kinda like it!

I was talking to a friend yesterday. Upon hearing the forecast, we were both relieved that the rain meant we wouldn’t have to worry about watering plants. We would also have an excuse not to do yard work. AND it would finally cool down, for gosh sakes.

I used to frolic when it finally got to 90 degrees in the Bay Area. Now, as an increasingly assimilated Pacific Northwesterner, at about 70 I put on shorts. At about 82 I start thinking it’s a tad warm. At 85 I’d rather be in the shade. At 90, I’ll be inside, thanks.

The forecast says we need to keep our patio cushions inside the garage at least through Saturday; Sunday would be safer. Summer returns on Monday with sunny skies and sweltering temps into the low 80s. Thank goodness we have air conditioning.*

*OK, technically, it’s a heat pump that acts as an air conditioner when it runs backwards. Yes, too much detail but we here at Woodhaven take our dedication to honest reporting very seriously.

After 150 years of record keeping, we had our first ever measurable rainfall on a July 18th in San Francisco. .01 inches. At least it drove the fog away for a day.
