It's a small county after all

It was four years ago that Rob and I started searching for what eventually became Woodhaven. It took us about four months, including one false start, to find our perfect combination of house and property.

During those four months, we became life-long friends with Carol our Realtor, learned that Burgerville has Caffeine Free Diet Coke on tap, learned that too much Caffeine Free Diet Coke and intricate map reading while riding on country roads guarantees afternoon nausea, discovered pastures of buffalo, Brahma bulls, camels, goats, sheep, and of course, llamas, and by the end of it, toured at least 50 houses across about 100 square miles. So, Saturday’s coincidence really shouldn’t have been a surprise.

With rumors of sun and sweltering temps in the high 50s, Rob and I made plans to meet some folks at a park for lunch. We’ve known the couple for several months, mostly as acquaintances. In the course of the get-to-know-you chit chat, we asked what part of the county they live in. As they started to describe their area, Rob asked increasingly more detailed questions.

“You know, when we were looking for a house, I think we looked at one on your street.”

“Really? What did it look like?”

”It was on the corner, and the bedrooms looked like they had been painted by kids.”

“That’s our house!!!”

Yep, about four years ago, our new friends put their house on the market with a plan to downsize. Their two daughters had each chosen themes for their bedrooms and had painted an underwater scene and a skyscape on their walls. But, after several months on the market and no one willing to repaint, the family decided to stay put. Jogged by the colorful bedrooms, I instantly recalled the fantastic porch and the kitchen in the back that reminded me of one I knew in the late 1970s. Just as I was about to describe features of our new friends’ house to them in detail, I stopped short. How freaky it would be to have someone you’ve just met tell you all about your home and decorating style!
