Is the worst embarrassment the type when you should be embarrassed but you aren’t cuz you don’t realize what you are doing is embarrassing?
Just checking the “news” on Yahoo a bit ago, I came across this impossible-to-resist breaking news headline: ‘80s playlist you’re ashamed to like.
So I eagerly clicked on it, expecting to see Cruel Summer by Bananarama, Caribbean Queen by Billy Ocean, Point of No Return by Expose, the one-hit-wonder We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off to Have Fun by Jermaine Stewart.
Instead, I found my iPod’s playlist. And a recap of most of the concerts I went to in high school. And nostalgic images of most of the cassettes I bought at Tower and Warehouse Records with the money I made from tutoring.
Most confusing was seeing my all-time favorite ‘80s song on the list: Talk Talk’s It’s My Life. I also didn’t understand why OMD or Scritti Politti or Roxy Music or Depeche Mode are embarrassing. Embarrassing? No, I’m quite sure I was WAY cool for openly liking that music then. Absolutely certain of it. In fact, I think I’m cool for liking it now. Further, I think I will be downright edgy in 50 years when I’m listening to Yaz in the nursing home once I get my hearing aids in. (This is especially hysterical if you know their song Bad Connection. See how cool I am??)
And fine, yes, I have every one of those songs in the third paragraph on my iPod, too.

You're cool for liking Scritti. No question. :)
And what about Aztec Camera?! Also up there in the coolness factor in my opinion.
Oh, Aztec Camera was awesome!! I also was a huge fan of Squeeze, English Beat, Bronksi Beat, New Order, and Erasure. OK, so I may have to concede some embarrassment factor on Erasure...
