Mom and I are getting pretty good at this getting lost thing. We managed to get only a little turned around on our way into Dubrovnik this morning. It was our first port and our first opportunity to get off of our Really Big Ship. No sea leg weirdness this time.
Our plan was to take the modestly priced shuttle into town so we could see the way and then walk the 2.5 advertised “easy” miles back later in the afternoon. Logical and smart, right? But the Official Photographer for the Really Big Ship assured us as we disembarked that Pile Gate – our entrance into really old Dubrovnik -- was “just down that way.” RBS-provided map in hand, we confidently headed “just down that way.”
We now know something very important about the RBS-provided maps: they are dangerously over-simplified. On the map, it is a large, straight, flat stroll from the dock to the old town. In reality, there are turns and forks and sidewalks that suddenly disappear and, oh yeah, a rather steep hill. So in just under 2 hours and with the help of a Croatian policeman and a strolling local, we eventually found the swarm of tourists and officially began our tour around this 7th century walled town plastered with lots of consonants and only a handful of vowels.
Although we were never in any danger and were not worried about truly being lost, we will stick to our original plan for future ports in which we don't already have a planned excursion. Logical and smart. But, I can already tell that Mom relishes the photo she took of an old Croatian woman proudly displaying her figs in a farmer's market we strolled through somewhere between here and there. Never would have seen that had we been shuttle bugs.

Love your trip narration!
How many memory cards did you two take for your cameras? :-)
Have fun! Stay healthy!
Love, Carolyn
I only took one 2GB card. Mom had four 2GB cards and used 1.5 of them. Hopefully she's not disappointed to have so severely under-photographed the trip. :-)
