Today was a day of lots of animal activities. We watched horses and goats and pigs and dogs. Zeke also finally got to meet some llamas. And not just some llamas, THE llamas. And not just meet them, he actually got to lead two of them around a show ring (no judges, though) and even made one jump over a bale of hay. For a city boy, he was looking mighty comfy around all the livestock. He’s gonna get some Carhartt and a big belt buckle yet.
This evening’s entertainment – before heading over to the hypnotist again – was the Extreme Air Motorcycles and Motocross Challenge. Rob and I had never been before so we didn’t know what to expect. It turned out to be pretty impressive. Daredevils ranging from 4 to about 24 years old rode motorcycles of various appropriate sizes around a dirt track, up and over hills offering many opportunities for motorcycles to fly through the air. The highlight of the show was the Freestyle event where five guys – four of which were from California – peeled off onto a ramp high into the air and did all sorts of tricky showy poses while flying Evel Knievel-like towards another ramp. It became great fun trying to capture the stunts in photos. We left before the Grand Finale since we were hungry, so we’ll find out next year what the organizers deem more exciting than kids on motorcycles pretending they are Elliot and ET.
One of my favorite parts of the day – besides eating – was listening to judges explain their decisions for ranking various 4-H goats and pigs. In both competitions, the judging was of the animal – not the human handler – for the purpose of eventually selling the animals for meat at Saturday’s auction. It’s an entirely different language, this animal judging thing. Here are a few particularly intriguing quotes from today’s judges:
“It’s a judgment call: who do you want to take home for dinner?”
“It is pot roast on wheels.”
“That’s a pretty goat. You can’t eat pretty.”
“I’m looking for greater conditioning of muscling in the loin.”
“The second white pig has a nice tail set.”
“That [pig] is gonna cut a good carcass.”
And speaking of food, here’s what was on today’s Fair Food Feast menu:
A late breakfast: Deep fried mac n' cheese and french fries. Tasty! But it would have been a little better with more mac n' cheese and less deep fried.
Real thick milkshake! I got boysenberry and Zeke got peach.
Finally warm enough to warrant a lime and cherry Hawaiian ice.
My daily corn...this time from a vendor who leaves the husk. It was fun to play with.
Lunch! A chicken gyro. It was pretty tasty and the tzatziki sauce had nice chunks of garlicy cucumber.
I was craving root beer. Crazy, because I really don't like root beer...
Time for a snack! Deep fried Twinkie. Sooo good when you ask them to make it fresh. Well worth the 5 minute wait.
Dinner! Teriyaki chicken and kalua pork with rice and some marinated veggies. It was all very tasty but my stomach hurt not long after finishing it. Oddly, the same thing happened to a friend yesterday. I think I'll steer clear from now on.
Finishing off the day with an even better elephant ear. Thanks, Kymi!
