Cow Town Moments

Moment #1:
A few days ago, at the nearest stop sign to our house, we saw a homemade sign reading “MISSING: 2 red Angus cows.” Not a cat, not a dog, not a cell phone. No, two cows. Missing. I guess there really is such a thing as cattle rustling.

The missing bovines have sincerely distressed me. It likely comes as a surprise to nobody that I have a great affinity for the two red cows living close to that sign. Equally predictable, I’ve named them. And Mama Cow and Pat weren’t in their pasture when we spotted the sign (they live across the street from Licking Cow, for those of you who have visited Woodhaven). Pat is a calf, born about a month ago. One day he was curled up in the grass and I happily exclaimed, “Look! A cow patty!” A name was born. And then edited a few days later when Patty was standing and proved herself to be a himself.

I’ve been rather heartsick since seeing that sign and the empty pasture. Even the cows’ chicken pals seem to have been cooped up in mourning.

Moment #2:
Overheard at the nail salon in town:

“My nails are in horrible shape because I raise replacement heifers for a dairy.”

I don’t know, either, but I’m about to Google it.

Moment #3:
While returning home from the aforehinted pedicure, I spotted Mama Cow and Pat back in their pasture. Hallelujah! Glory Be! Very happy here at Woodhaven. The sign is still there, so we’ll continue to be on the lookout for misplaced and as yet unnamed Anguses.

I may have found the missing bovines. I did BBQ some steaks tonight. Sure seems like a long trip to steal a cow though.
