We arrived a bit after 1:00 and I was suitably starving since I had only had a handful of cashews and a bottle of water as part of my “There Shall Be No Food But Fair Food” fasting effort for the week.
It was a pretty slow day since it was probably close to 97 degrees (Woodhaven registered 94 degrees) and it was Switch Day. This is the day when the animals from the first half of the fair go home and a new crop of animals arrives tonight and tomorrow morning. There are some new types of animals (pigs) and some go home for good (cats). And a number of other animals switch between being 4-H animals and “Open Class.” Open Class means anybody can bring their animal. If I were to have a llama, for instance, I could show it in the fair as an Open Class llama. And yes, to answer the burning question, Rojo will be there starting tomorrow!
We packed quite a bit of eating in in just 6 hours. We left just as an entire line dance of cowboy boots was arriving. Tonight’s concert is some guy named Joe Nichols which I can only assume is that Country and Western stuff.
Here’s the day’s recap:
FUN
- Air conditioning – We wandered around in the air conditioned exhibition and vendor hall. I discovered my Sleep Number is off their dial. I also discovered the olive booth is gone. This was disturbing since I count on the free toothpicks for my after-corn grooming. In other news, I resisted having my feet detoxed.
- Prove it! – Rob took the Toyota Prove It Challenge. This was basically a dirt course designed to show off the suspension, traction, and comfort of the Toyota Tundra (truck) and Sequoia (SUV). I hung out in the back-saving shade and took photos while Rob bumped and twisted along hills and pot holes and banks. He had a good time but not nearly as much as the two teenage boys right before him. They spoke mightily of resisting the temptation to roll the truck.
- Dogs again – More Dock Dogs. One of the best places to sit in the shade and watch something other than sweaty people walk by. The longest jump today was over 24 feet!
FOOD
- Corn on the cob
- Chicken fajita
- Lemonade
- Jalapeno beef stick sample
- Ice cream bar
- Slush puppy -- a glorified Slurpee in which you can mix all sorts of kid-friendly flavors in your cup for just $5. Mine included Blue Raspberry, Green Apple, Kiwi Strawberry, Cherry, and Fruit Punch.
- Grizzly Kabob -- 4 large strawberries dipped in luscious chocolate, all on a squewer
- Half of a deep fried Oreo -- Rob decided to try this despite last year’s severe disappointment with the deep fried Twinkie. The Oreo was simply awesome. We will be visiting that booth again, likely tomorrow.
- Frozen raspberry lemonade sample
- Louisiana hot link-on-a-stick -- a hot link cut into several pieces, on a kabob with onions and bell peppers. It was fabulous. Especially with the added sprinkle of Cayenne pepper and Tabasco sauce.
- Half of Rob’s French fries
- Diet Pepsi
