County Fair Encore! Day 2

With a few hours’ sleep and digestion, it was time for Day 2 of the County Fair. We arrived a little after 10am this morning after having met up with some friends and their two kids just outside the gate. Just in time for breakfast!

We introduced Sydney and Isaac to the wonders of goats, sheep, ducks, jumping dogs, and an elephant ear. In return, we got to witness first hand the magical powers of sugar when consumed by a somewhat ho-hum 5-year-old. Any parent has seen the amazing flipping of the switch when a kid is given a shot of sugar but I hadn’t. I tell you, just a few hearty nibbles of the cinnamon and sugar coated deep fried dough my people call “Elephant Ear” and Sydney was a transformed little girl. It was astounding to me and old hat to her mom and dad.

We called it a day at about 2:30. I kept my food inhalation to a minimum due to dinner plans outside the fair. Well, my definition of minimum anyway.

Here's the day's recap:

FUN
  • Dock dogs – dogs running on a platform and jumping into a long pool of water. The winning jump was just under 21 feet.

  • Pygmy goat confirmation judging – beyond just confirming that they were indeed cute little goats with wide hips (I feel a kinship), the 20-something judge spoke a mystical language including words like flank, withers, meat, top line, pastern and muscling. My favorite goat was Tank who was pulled out of competition by his 10-year-old handler because Tank insisted upon rolling over every time his handler tried to encourage him towards the ring. I decided perhaps Tank was actually a fainting goat and therefore wouldn't have fared well in the category anyway.

  • Trumpet parade – as we were heading back to the car, Sydney and Isaac each received plastic trumpets. After some quick and presumably effective negotiations regarding trumpeting in the car on the ride home, Sydney and Isaac made quick and thorough use of their trumpets all the way back to the parking lot. They had a fabulous time tooting through the fairgrounds and did a great job clearing a path for us adults. Without a doubt WAY more fun than the cowboy hats would have been.
FOOD
  • Corn on the cob
  • Hot dog
  • Cheeseburger with grilled onions
  • Elephant ear
  • Diet Pepsi

Yes – the trumpet negotiations were successful. Both kids know that trumpeting in the car is not allowed if either parent is in the car, they are also aware that at home they are an outside toy. (Sydney is all about rules so, so far we are safe). But at Nai-Nai’s (Grandma Sue’s) they can be used at music time. So after a couple days at home they are currently safely at Nai-Nai’s…
