I’m officially old. And it has nothing to do with the calendar.

There’s a whole industry of music that is used in gym classes these days. Specially formulated CDs of upbeat, fast-tempo remakes, mostly of ’80s and ‘90s Top 40 hits. Actually, it’s the only way I can enjoy hip-hop music.

Today in an exercise class, my hipster days officially ended. And the fact that I use the term “hipster” seals the deal. While doing tricep extensions with 3 lbs weights, I heard the Gym Musak version of “The Time Warp” from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I remember seeing Rocky Horror for the first time my senior year in high school, thinking I was beyond cool. Twenty years later, I’m in my Lycra-cotton blend, tapping my Nikes, thinking “Janet” (Susan Saradon) looks fabulous in those “I’m over 50” Revlon commercials. Horror, indeed.

Ah, but you are cool, Toni! Just because the Muzak people think that time renders anything toothless and safe doesn't mean they're right. :-)

For example: moms and dads and grandmas and kindergarten teachers and American Idol viewers nowadays all seem to think Lennon's "Imagine" is such a warm, peaceful, sweet, unifying song -- though they never actually listen to the lyrics, which are advocating a nationless, religionless planet.

And "Butterflies are free to fly, fly away" -- oh, how pretty, Elton John is so inspiring, la la la... and of course the song is about cheating, or perhaps about free love (sort of depends how you interpret it)...

So anyway, you are cool. And BTW, 80s music rocks! Much better than most of this modern stuff. :-)
