FUN:
- Drill team quad competition - we wandered into the Horse Arena and watched a few drill teams compete. They were mostly four women in costumes riding horses in patterns and varying degrees of synchronization. My favorite was the team who rode to Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild" while dressed as a motorcycle leather gang.
- Goat and sheep auctions - pretty serious stuff and pretty serious money was being shelled out for these 4-H projects. We saw one goat go for $1200 and the Grand Champion Home Raised Sheep went for $1000. We wisely refused an auction paddle.
- Llama-lympics - an obstacle course competition for llamas and their handlers. Both the llama and its human partner had to slalom, side step, walk backwards, stop and start, walk over a bridge, and walk through tree branches as well as a shallow pool of water. My favorite was the 5-year-old boy who didn't even reach the chin of his 2 year-old llama. They came in second place in their class. The kid had more fun afterwards running through the course by himself...again and again and again.
- Rojo Handling - OK, so this was nearly a dream come true. There's this truly llovely llama named Rojo. I've admired him for days and actually recognized him from last year's fair. Yeah, yeah, I know. Anyway, with some nudging from Rob and a well-timed question after the llama-lympics were over, I received some basic instruction from Rojo's 15-year-old trainer and then got to walk Rojo through the obstacle course!!! Llama heaven! I want one, I want one, I want one! Rob, can I have a llama??? Pleeeeeeeeese???
- Llamas, especially and repeatedly Rojo
- Alpacas
- Frozen strawberry margarita (no tequila)
- White cheddar popcorn
- Chocolate and vanilla swirl ice cream
- Onion-aire burger (hamburger smothered in grilled Walla Walla onions)
- French fries
- Diet Pepsi

How did you make it through five days of fair food and not have a "deep-fried 'something'" (Twinkie, Snickers, Cheese-stick, etc.)? Was the line too long? They are easy to find at the Pleasanton fair. I can't imagine they wouldn't have them at your fair, too!

Well, there was the elephant ears, the fried green tomatoes, and the funnel cake. But really you all know that Toni eats healthier than I do, so it's *my* job to try the deep-fried things.
Deep fried Twinkie sounded so much like heaven, but no. Sadly, it was more like a corn-dog shaped, chocolate drizzled, semi-funnel-cake flavored thing. No cream filling at all. Not worth the hype, and not interesting enough to go back and try the deep fried cheesecake. Your mileage may vary, but I'm sticking with the elephant ears.
I prefer my fried food to be salty or vinegary, not so much sweet. Of course, elephant ears are a fabulous exception to the rule. I think my favorite fried offering is the fried green tomatoes. I've never had them anywhere else; one of these days I'll try them in the South and see how authentic the fair ones really are.
